The Senate remains in the control of the Republicans.
The Democrats and Republicans are two political parties in the United States (groups of people with very different ideas about how the country should be run). US President Donald Trump is a Republican.
On Nov. 6, the United States had a big election, called the "mid-term" elections. Americans vote for who they wanted to represent them in two main branches of their government: the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Canada to Lead Trade Missions for Women, LGBTQI, Indigenous Businesses https://teachingkidsnews.com/2018/04/22/canada-to-lead-trade-missions-for-women-lgbtqi-indigenous-businesses/ Mon, 23 Apr 2018 00:09:50 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=16966 The Canadian government is going to help businesses owned by women, Indigenous peoples, and LGBTQI people (LGBTQI means lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning and intersex people).
The government will create "trade missions" to support their businesses.
A trade mission is when one country -- in this case Canada -- travels to another country in order to talk about increasing the amount of business between the two countries.
Typically, business owners and government officials go to another country, and meet with business owners and government officials there. They discuss ways the countries can work together.

Quebec’s Bill 62 Bans Face Coverings For Public Workers https://teachingkidsnews.com/2017/10/22/quebecs-bill-62-bans-face-coverings-public-workers/ Mon, 23 Oct 2017 00:58:47 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=16439 People in Quebec are worried that Muslim women could be denied certain public services, after the government passed a "religious neutrality" bill.
The province's Bill 62 was passed by the Quebec provincial government on Oct. 18. It says that people who work for the government in certain jobs must have their face uncovered. It also requires people who are using government services -- for instance, riding a bus or using a library -- must do so with their face uncovered.
It also bans public workers, like doctors and teachers, from covering their face while they are working.

Ikea Criticized For Airbrushing Women From Its Saudi Arabia Catalogue https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/15/5-ikea-criticized-for-airbrushing-women-from-its-saudi-arabia-catalogue/ https://teachingkidsnews.com/2012/10/15/5-ikea-criticized-for-airbrushing-women-from-its-saudi-arabia-catalogue/#comments Tue, 16 Oct 2012 02:04:57 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=7632 Ikea is a large chain of stores around the world that sells furniture and home accessories.

Recently the company came under fire for removing all of the images of women from the pictures in the Saudi Arabia edition of their catalogue.

In the Ikea catalogue, families are shown using and enjoying Ikea's products. In the Saudi Arabia version of the book, none of the families show women in them.

In other editions of the catalogue, women are featured in the photos.

The images of women were digitally removed from the pictures in the catalogue. This is known as airbrushing or photoshopping.

Ikea said they shouldn’t have removed the images; they regret having done it.

Ikea prints more than 60 versions of its catalogue and sends them all over the world.

Alberta’s First Female Premier https://teachingkidsnews.com/2011/10/02/albertas-first-female-premier/ Mon, 03 Oct 2011 00:13:26 +0000 https://teachingkidsnews.com/?p=3527 Alison Redford will be Alberta's first female premier.

Her political party, the Alberta Progressive Conservatives, voted her in as their leader on Sunday.

She replaces Ed Stelmach, who had stepped down. He was the leader of Alberta’s Progressive Conservative party, and the premier of the province.

By replacing Stelmach, Redford will not only be the party's leader but the province's premier as well – at least until the next provincial election (likely in 2012) when the public will help to choose who the premier will be.

Until she is sworn in as premier, her title is Premier-Designate.
